見人難，有惻隱之心；見人惡，抱不平之氣。
Seeing another’s hardship, it feels pity. Seeing wrong, it cannot let it pass.
Zi Wei Dou Shu Quan Shu, vol. 1
In plain words
Tian Xiang is the seal, a minister at the emperor’s side. It is read as honest in speech and moved by other people’s trouble. The book says it does not change its nature for bad company, and that it counts as good in all twelve palaces.
Sources Zi Wei Dou Shu Quan Shu, vols. 1 and 2, from an online transcription, not yet checked against a printed edition. The plain text is ours, and it leaves out the book’s harshest lines about death and about women.
