Understanding date selection
Date selection looks for a good day for a task. Each day carries lucky and unlucky spirits, and old manuals set out which tasks each one helps or blocks. We follow Xie Ji Bian Fang Shu, the manual the Qing court issued to clear up the almanacs of its day.
See the Yearly Guides for dates, directions and the twelve signs →
How it works
- Read the dayEach day has a stem and branch, a day officer, and spirits for its month.
- Check the taskThe book lists which spirits favour the task and which forbid it.
- Weigh the twoIts ranking table decides when a good spirit outweighs a bad one.
- List the daysWe show the days the task is allowed, in date order.
How to read it
- Start with the listEvery day shown passes the book’s rules for the task.
- Check the clashMany people avoid a day that clashes with their zodiac animal. You can skip those days.
- Open a dayThe Daily Almanac shows the full reasons for each day.
- Keep it in proportionChoose what also suits your life. A date is never the whole story.
Our method
- Rules
- The same engine as the Daily Almanac, from vols. 4 to 11 of Xie Ji Bian Fang Shu.
- Clash filter
- Skipping your animal’s clash is common practice. It is optional and is not a rule from the book.
- Span
- We search up to 120 days from your start date.
Common questions
Why are some weeks empty?
Some tasks have strict rules, so good days can be rare.
Is a day not listed bad?
Not always. It means the book’s rules do not favour this task on that day.
Does this use my birth date?
No. Only the optional animal filter is personal.
