In each palace: mountain star on the left, facing star on the right, period star below. North is at the top.
Both period stars gather at the front. The school treats this as good for wealth and weak for people.
This chart uses the plain method only. If the direction is close to the line between two mountains, schools use a replacement method that we do not offer. Measure with a compass.

Understanding flying star charts
Xuan Kong is a school of feng shui that reads a building by time as well as direction. Time runs in nine periods of twenty years. A chart has three layers: the period stars, the mountain stars and the facing stars.
How it works
- Find the periodThe period is set by when the building was finished. 2024 to 2043 is Period 9.
- Lay the period starsThe period number goes to the centre and the stars spread in the Luo Writing order.
- Take the two starsThe stars in the sitting and facing palaces go to the centre of their own charts.
- Choose the directionEach star flies forward or backward by the yin or yang of its matching mountain.
How to read it
- Read the patternIt tells you where the strongest stars sit.
- Look at the front and backMountain stars are read at the back, and facing stars at the front.
- Find the period starIt is the strongest star in the chart.
- Keep it in proportionReal assessment needs the site itself.
Our method
- Source
- The method taught today comes from Shen Zhuren. We could not check it against a primary text, since the old books hide the arithmetic. Treat it as modern teaching.
- Check
- All 48 charts of Periods 7 and 8 match the published lists of the four patterns. Period 9 matches what could be found.
- Replacement charts
- Not offered. Teachers differ on them.
- Periods
- Six to nine. Period 5 has no trigram of its own, and schools split it differently.
Common questions
What if I do not know the period?
Use the year the building was finished or last fully renovated.
How is this different from Annual Flying Stars?
That page shows the year’s stars for everyone. This one is about one building.
Are my choices saved?
No.
