Han Yu, epitaph for Li Xuzhong

What it is

Li Xuzhong, styled Changrong, passed the imperial exams and rose to censor. Han Yu wrote his epitaph, saying he knew the books of the five elements better than anyone and judged a life from the year, month and day of birth.

He died in 813 at fifty-two. Han Yu also records that he took a mercury elixir in the hope of living forever.
