What it is
Xu Zhimo of Jianyang studied in the Wanli years. He argued that compasses of his day relied too much on the twenty-four directions, and he drew a plate of thirty-three rings, with notes by his pupil Zhu Zhixiang.
On this site
Xie Ji Bian Fang Shu also speaks of compasses of over thirty rings. The dial on our home page shows twelve.
